Questions on Y-Cam YCK003 Knight SD Wireless Indoor IP Camera

  • From paul at 09/11/2011 12:36
    • sorry if im being a bit stupid, but does the camra need a mains elec supply
    • Hi Paul,

Yes, currently none of the cameras we offer are battery powered, so all need to be powered via a cable. These Y-cams are supplied with a mains plug-top power supply which has a 3m lead as standard, but you will see that we also offer Y-cam extension leads up to 10m in length.

    • Is this camera Mac compatible? Is it the same as Y-cam White SD with more features?
    • Hello Barry,

All of the Y-cams are Mac compatible.

This Y-cam Knight SD is as per the White SD, but has the addition of built-in infra-red LEDs to enable it to 'see in the dark'.

    • Hi Please ignore my last stupid question, i have worked it out, and now have three new stupid questions instead.

      1. what is the maximum size of sd card supported and how much recording time do I get for each 1gb
      2. i assume that if i get the sd version but decide that i want to record to my network hard drive, i can? i.e. you do not have to use the sd function.
      3. can the camera record to both the sd card and my network hardrive at the same time to give me a back up?
    • Hello Andrew,
No such thing as a stupid question, I'd like to respond to your previous query about the Y-cam IP camera versions just to help others who may be wondering:
      a) Y-cam White - colour only camera with no infra-red LEDs to 'see in the dark' (white plastic body)
      b) Y-cam Knight - a colour/mono switching camera with built-in infra-red LEDs (white plastic body)
      c) Y-cam black - exactly the same features and performance as the Knight, but with a black plastic body
Any version with an 'SD' suffix has a built-in memory card slot in the base of the camera which can accept a micro-SD memory card.
Each of the above cameras can be 'housed' for outdoor use in a weatherproof Y-cam Shell housing (available in black or white).

      Now, to answer your questions:
      1. The maximum capacity of micro-SD card is 8GB, which at a setting of three images per second will record for about 7 days continuously. Therefore, 1GB will last a little less than a day of continuous recording - longer, if you reduce the video frame rate e.g. at 1 image per second, 1GB will last nearly 3 days.
      2. Yes, you can choose not to use the micro-SD card at all and record to your PC's hard drive or to a Network Video Recorder.
      3. Honest answer is that we've not tried recording to both the card and the PC simultaneously. We'll test this out and update this response in due course.

  • From Accy at 30/04/2010 12:46
    • I want to set up a web cam at my 86yr old fathers house (with his permission) which is 100 yards from my house, do I have to get broadband in his house, and once connected to the router, make it wireless without leaving a computer there, or is there a way of using my broadband.
Sorry if its a stupid question, computers are not my forte
    • Hi Accy,

It is as you say. You need to have broadband connected at your father's house. You'll need a broadband service which includes a wireless router.

As these are network cameras they do not need to be connected to a computer. The camera will connect to his new wireless home network. You will be able to configure internet access to the camera.

You will need to use a laptop or similar at his house for the initial setup of your father's network and camera.

As you are looking at organising a new internet connection it is worth trying to get a contract which provides a static internet IP address. This will make it a little simpler to locate your father's home and camera from anywhere else. Plusnet always used to offer good value internet connections with a static IP address.

      Hope that helps ...
