Ive just installed a set of cameras, but lighting in the dark isnt very good, so would i be better to install more infa red lighting? Or normal up lights around my exterior?

It's fine to use normal lighting if it's not a problem for you to leave it on all night.
White light can be advantageous, as it will allow you to render colour images overnight.
Bear in mind that you will need to light the scene - I'm not sure that uplighters will be very practical/effective for improving your CCTV performance as they tend to be used to light the wall and not the scene.
BTW - keep the light source out of the field of view of the camera.
