Setting up a QNAP NVR and adding your first camera

What is the QNAP?
The QNAP VS-4008 Pro Series VioStor NVR is a professional standalone network video surveillance systems, specifically designed to meet the needs of a small to medium business or enterprise looking for an easy and reliable security solution. This device is a Linux-based system that supports PC-free quick configuration and monitoring of IP cameras over the network as well as video playback by connecting a monitor to the built-in VGA connector, a USB keyboard and a USB mouse. The VioStor NVR supports many video formats such as H.264, MxPEG, MPEG-4, and M-JPEG recording, Megapixel recording and up to 8 TB storage capacity over 4 hard drive spaces . It is compatible with 800+ models from popular IP cameras brands.
Main Features:
The VioStor NVR has many brilliant features. The interface has a unique appearance and is easy to navigate. This system allows the user to have multi-server monitoring, which means you can monitor up to 128 channels. Video search by IVA (Intelligent Video Analytics) is also available, which includes motion detection, foreign object, missing object, out of focus, and camera occlusion. Other powerful functions include multi-channel playback at different speeds, easy data search by date & time and alarm event, event management with a larger range of supported alarm event types and handling options and strengthened user management for secure access control. All of these features can be obtained through a web-based GUI by the IE browser.

How to set up to an exterior computer:
This post will demonstrate the easy set up of a QNAP VS-4008 Pro Series using an exterior computer over the network. Firstly, check that all components are available and ready to use. Start by connecting to 12v AC adaptor to the rear of the device and connect to Ethernet cable from the rear of the device to your local network access point.

Next take the software CD that comes with the product and insert into the computer that you wish to set up on. Once the CD loads, click << run.exe >>...

... it will bring you to a QNAP menu page with the following options.First click on the << 'Install QNAP Finder >> and follow the install setup.

Once the QNAP Finder is installed, return to the CD main menu and click << Install QNAP Codec>>.​
The QNAP Finder application should now appear on your desktop. Open the programme to start the process of set up.​

Q Finder will automatically search the network for any QNAP devices that are connected.​
(NOTE: You may need to temporarily disable your firewall to allow the programme to find your QNAP)

Once the finder has found your device, double-click on the IP Address which will automatically open your web browser and direct you to the IP. On first set up you may be prompted for a username and password which default for QNAP is Username: admin Password: admin.

Now navigate to the top right hand side of the screen and select the system config button:​

This brings you to the configuration page. Here we can set up the QNAP as well as add new cameras.​
Go to << Quick Configuration >>. This page will now guide you through the 6-step setup.​
Click step one.​
On this screen you can set the name of your QNAP.​

Click next or step two.​
Here you can set a password for your device (default will be 'admin').​

Click next or step three.​
You can set the date and time using this page.​

Click next or step four.​
Via this page you can change any network settings.​

Click next or step five.​
Using this screen you can configure your hard drives.​

Click next or step six.​
On this last screen you can set up any cameras you have attached. (We explain how to do this below)​

Click on the photo camera icon to start adding cameras.​

For your first camera select << Camera 1 >> and fill in all the appropriate fields.​

Once you have completed click << Apply >>.

Now test the camera to make sure the connection has worked.​

Now navigate back to the main interface via the button at the top right of the screen.​

The top left screen will now say connecting and after a few seconds you will see a live feed of the camera that has been set up.​
