Today we will be looking at the FD8151v a 1.3MP Vandal-Resistant Dome Camera from Vivotek. This is another good compact camera from Vivotek that once again has impressed us.

This is a 1.3MP mini dome camera that can shoot 30fps at 1280x1024 with a viewing angle of 110 degrees (F2) or 64 degrees (F4). It has IR LEDs that allow you to see at a minimum illumination of 0.001 Lux up to 5 meters. This camera comes in two versions with a selectable lenses of either 2.5mm or 4mm. For the purposes of this review we are using the F2 version. It has an IK10 rated vandal proof housing for extra security, on-board storage via an SD card slot, ONVIF compliance and uses Power over Ethernet (preferred method of 95% of our customers). This compact camera measures at 100mm in diameter and 55mm in height.

This camera looks great and is very compact meaning it would suit in any environment. It's considerable viewing angle (F2 model) of more than a right angle means you could easily capture a whole room space from one camera.

Check out our recent unboxing video:

This camera is very compact and simple in design, although its vandal-proof housing makes it slightly heavier than other cameras of its size (284g). However it is noticeably better quality and more robust than many other cameras. This camera only has one port on it for your Ethernet cable, which can tidily come from the side or rear of the camera. Whereas other models have a plastic cover on the side hole, meaning that you have to snap it to gain access, this camera has a rubber cover, therefore it can be removed and replaced. Below we have images of the camera with the cover removed and the exit hole.

Each Vivotek camera comes with their own native FREE ST7501 recording software, which allows users to record up to 32 channels using Vivotek cameras. This software works on a server/client basis, where you can have the server installed on one PC and access the live view and recordings via another PC. This great software also comes with IOS and Android applications to enable on-the-go access.

As with all Vivotek cameras, we have a familiar web client interface which is easy to use and fluid throughout. From this web client you can live view the cameras streams, configure all of the cameras settings, use the digital zoom tools, take snapshots and many other features. Below is a screengrab of the web client.

We recorded a lot of footage from this camera using two different methods; firstly using the Vivotek ST7501 software and secondly using our QNAP VioStor, which is a great solution when recording multiple devices. As this camera is brand new, it is not on the QNAP compatibility list yet (12/05/2013) but because this camera is ONVIF compliant it can still be recorded by the QNAP. Below is a snapshot taken from the QNAP.

We also captured some sample footage of this camera:

I honestly feel this camera is excellent, the picture for a 1.3mp camera is second to none. The picture quality at night is also just as good.

The fact that this is such a compact camera, that is vandal-proof, has a HUGE viewing angle and not to mention looks great makes it one of my favourite Vivotek cameras. It is ONVIF compliant and uses PoE, which means it will incorporate easily into any existing CCTV network.

I feel this camera would be best suited for a large office or a classroom environment as you get a huge area covered and good picture quality.

If you want a small, secure, great quality IP camera from a manufacture you can trust at a good price this is the one for you!
