ONVIF is a standard/specification/forum for interconnecting IP cameras, Network Video Recorders (NVRs), Video Management Systems (VMS = CCTV software) from different manufacturers.
This standard has been around since 2008, and is now very widely and well implemented.
It is this ONVIF compatibility feature that enables you to for instance manage & record HikVision cameras on a Milesight NVR.
