There are lots of dome cameras (not just the Sanyo VDC-HD3100P), some shown with the dome pointing downwards as though the unit is attached to the ceiling and others pointing horizontally as though the camera and housing are attached to a a wall.
Does the orientation shown in the illustrations really indicate how the camera has to be mounted or can dome cameras generally be mounted on walls or ceilings as desired.
If there is no clear general answer to the question, then can this particular camera and housing be mounted on a wall.

Yes, this dome camera and all the others can be mounted vertically (to a wall) or horizontally (under a soffit / porch / canopy / ceiling / shelf).
Almost all dome cameras have what is known as a 3-axis gimbal mechanism inside which allows you to achieve any pan/tilt angle for the camera and lens within the dome bubble.
The one tricky application that you need to bear in mind is when you may want to mount the dome camera on a house wall and want to look back along that same wall (perhaps to monitor across some patio doors), most domes cannot be fixed back to a wall and have sufficient adjustment within the gimbal to swivel right back and look along the same wall. For such an application the best thing to do is to mount the network dome camera bubble downwards using an L-shaped bracket, then you can use the gimbal's rotation and angle adjustment to look along the wall.
Also, please bear in mind that with the Sanyo dome cameras the RJ45 network connector protrudes from the rear of the dome camera, and if you want to mount it to a hard surface such as brickwork you will need to use Sanyo's VA-85BX back box for the camera.
Hope that helps ...
