What relay to use for NVR Alarm Out and Garden Flood Lighting

Can anyone recommend the best relay (and PSU to use with it) to trigger garden flood lights via the alarm out please? There are so many out there its a bit of a mine field.

I have two floodlights, both with PIR. One is reliable, the other isn't. The larger of the two is 70w, the other one is physically half the size, but not sure of the wattage.

Both have been wired on the same circuit and have a switch in the house so they can be turned on or off.

I will likely swap both lights for non PIR equivalents, and replace the switch with the relay letting the CCTV control them.

NVR is Hik Vision DS-7608NXI-K28P(D)

Any pointers to the best relay to use would be very much appreciated - Thank you!

Up front I'll say if you're not confident/knowledgable with electrical wiring get an electrician to it for safety's sake.

You would disable the PIRs on both floods or replace them as you've suggested. Common/Normally open connections of the relay would connect to line/switched line that are currently in the switch. Using a small 12V DC supply, connect the +12V to one side of the coil, the 0V to one side of the NVR output (GND), then the other side of the NVR output to the other side of the relays coil.

You will want a 230V AC relay rated at 6 or 10 amps. In the past I would have used an 8 pin plug in relay and base with terminals. However these are rather bulky and wouldn't fit in a standard box. Personally I'd fit a second box, tight to the existing light switch for two reasons. Firstly you can connect the relay in parallel with the existing light switch (so you can leave the lights on permanently while you're out there without needing to trigger the motion constantly); secondly it means you're not taking the 12V wiring from the NVR into the light switch.

Thank you for your reply, very kind of you. I'm confident I can wire it correctly and if I am in any doubt I will certainly get an electrician on the job.

I was actually asking if anyone could recommend the best relay and 12v DC supply for the job.

[Personally I'd fit a second box, tight to the existing light switch] This has lost me a bit, do you mean a second box to house the relay?

I had planned to loose the existing light switch completely and remove it. I was under the impression I could trigger the alarm manually via Hik Connect to turn the floods on and off if needed, which is rare. The only problem being if the network goes down, which would be temporary.

Thanks again!

Any old 12V DC plug in adaptor will do (charger etc) - just chop the barrel connector off it and strip the wires for termination.

For the relay, there are loads on Amazon. 8 Pin plug in relay and base (as said they're a little bulky) 12V DC coil and 230V 10 amp rated. I'd usually use something by Finder or Omron but I can't locate one of theirs on Amazon with 12V DC coil (both RS and Farnell will undoubtedly have them)

Yes

Yes you can trigger them via Hik-Connect manually. It's just handy to keep a manual switch (at least that's my preference)

...... all very helpful information, hopefully I will report back with a story of success!!

As you are very knowledgable, and helpful, I have another quick question if you don't mind please. Maybe I should create a new thread so feel free to tell me off if so!

My new'ish NVR, DS-7608NXI-K28P(D), has an illuminated (white) circle on the front with two flashing indicators within it at 3 and 9 o clock (HDD activity and Network activity). When I first fired it up the whole circle and was brightly lit, it was the same brightness as the flashing lights at 3 and 9, but after a while it dims, so now the circle is hardly lit.

It's no biggie, but it does seem odd.... has anyone else noticed similar, or knows why it happens?

I'll be honest, in the last 12 years I've never paid any attention to the LEDs.

If it's a '(D)' model, more of a concern will be whether it came with a case fan fitted, as Hikvision initially released them without. Following a spate of HDD failures it was determined that a fan must be fitted and now is. I've had a couple fail in the last few months and had to fit new HDD's (warranty) and the fan.

... more good advice! Mine did come with a fan, RHS rear. I replaced it for a quieter one, but it's still loud. It didn't take long to work out the noise is down to the case design, and with case removed it's almost silent. Maybe the noise indicates the fan is doing it's job properly, ie. moving lots of air.....
