Cameras will not work on new NVR

I have a used DS-7616NXI-K2/16P(D), reset to factory settings and set up etc., but I cannot get any camera to work with it. The aim of this is to replace an existing older NVR with this more up to date hardware. Firmware is V4.84.101 build 251212.

When I connect a Hikvision camera (direct, PoE) taken from the old NVR it sees it IP-wise, shows the serial and model etc. but will not show any video. Plus, it continually disconnects (says Connecting...) and reconnects (green tick).

On the NVR HDMI screen it shows a blank for ages and then shows 'Getting sub-stream exception'. And that's as far as I can get - I don't know what to try next.

I reset the camera to see if that made any difference but no. I tried switching to the main stream via the GUI, no change.

The camera was added plug and play - I tried manual too. It still works fine when plugged into the old NVR. The channel password is the same as the old NVR.

I am missing something daft - something I didn't do but no clue as to what. This is nothing like when I set up the old one, everything just worked. Any ideas?

Plug and play would only work if the cameras have been factory reset/deactivated; unless you plug an already activated camera into a different NVR, where the existing camera already has an identical password to the NVRs password (or default channel password if that was used)

It could be an mis match on the security type if it's a really old camera. You should first check what the cameras firmware versions are, update them to the latest versions (staged updates if very old)

What you may be able to try is look for the following setting on your NVR via the web UI not the local (it may be in a different location as this is an older K series):

Change the RTSP Authentication from 'digest' to 'digest/basic'. If the cameras are too old to support digest authentication that change will allow the NVR to use basic authentication as a fall back.

The channel pass is the same as the old NVR, also wouldn't the hard reset of the cam sort the plug&play business? The camera is relatively new and firmware is all up to date.

Surely upgrading an NVR can't be this hard...

Hard reset of the cam should return it to unactivated state where it has no password. 'Restore to default settings' leaves the camera activated; 'Restore to factory settings' deactivates it. I normally do it while powering it from a separate PoE supply not the NVR and confirm that is deactivated by browsing to the default IP address (192.168.1.64) and ensure I get the activation screen before plugging it back into a plug and play channel.

It generally isn't but it could be if not done right. I'd have done it different where cameras are already activated. I'd have:
  • noted the existing 192.168.254.xxx IP addresses of the cameras
  • powered up the new NVR without the cameras
  • edited each channel from plug and play to manual and entered the IP addresses of each existing camera and password before saving (therefore turning off plug and play)
  • plugged each camera into its corresponding channel on the new NVR. At that point the new NVR would submit the manually entered admin password to the existing camera and connected.
There's more than one way to do it.

Thanks for the suggestions - I had actually followed a guide (on here I think) and did much of what you suggested. Anyway, I have hard reset the cam again, reset another camera (logged in and reverted to default) - but the issue remains. Both show up in that the NVR shows the serials and firmwares etc, both continually connect and disconnect, one even generated some motion alerts but neither do video which does kind of negate the whole process.

Both are now connected to the old NVR - even on different ports than before - and are working fine. So for now this upgrade became a downgrade and the new NVR is sitting on the naughty step.

I actually began this thinking I would upgrade the disks in the old one but why not upgrade the whole thing? Tomorrow those new disks are going in the old NVR.
