I thought I’d check in, as I have done over the years, to see whether there’s finally been a fix for this long-running problem, or any new work-arounds.
Being able to view my cameras in a web browser on a Mac isn’t my main concern, as I can already view live footage and playback through the Hik-Connect app. What has really affected me is the inability to configure Line Crossing and Intrusion Detection. To set these up correctly, you need to see exactly what the camera is viewing so you can accurately position the detection lines and intrusion areas.
In the past, I used Internet Explorer to configure these functions, but that no longer appears to be an option. With Apple’s recent updates removing support for Intel-based technologies, that workaround has effectively come to an end.
I can log into my DVR remotely from anywhere using my DDNS address and IP, and I have full access to the configuration menus. Everything works flawlessly except for the inability to view the camera image while configuring the smart events.
As a result, I’m effectively limited to using basic motion detection. Unfortunately, without seeing the camera’s view during setup, I can’t mask out shadows, tree movement or other areas that cause false triggers. This significantly reduces the usefulness of the detection features.
I normally upgrade or replace cameras every couple of years, but this issue is now preventing me from doing so, as I can’t properly configure the analytics afterwards. I don’t really want to spend £85 on a third-party application just to set up Line Crossing or Intrusion Detection once every couple of years.
On a positive note, I found the new SADP Tool for Mac very useful and would certainly recommend it to other Mac users.
Has anyone found a reliable solution or workaround for configuring smart events from a Mac without relying on paid third-party software?
