Can you replace single SATA HDD without losing settings?

I'm not too familiar with Dahua as I mostly deal with HikVision.

But, if I have a Dahua NVR with a single SATA interface can I just change (upgrade) the single HDD and it still keeps all the settings or does the NVR store its settings on the single HDD?

I guess if it does store the settings on the HDD I would need to do some sort of export settings to USB stick, change the HDD and then import settings back from USB stick?

But could someone confirm either way so I know the right process?
